Sisters by Tony Klinger, gets its UK premiere at Chichester International Film Festival 2021

Phoenix is proud to announce that it’s documentary SISTERS, by Tony Klinger, the story of the first all-female orchestra in Afghanistan, gets its UK premiere at the Chichester International Film Festival.

It will be shown at 1.30pm Monday 16th August 2021 in The Studio, Chichester New Park Cinema, New Park Rd, Chichester PO19 7XY, with an introduction by producer Tony Klinger, followed by a Q & A at around 2.55pm.

The documentary feature film Sisters is a real-life story. It investigates the lives of the Zohra members, the first all-female orchestra in Afghanistan’s and their two young leaders: Negin Khpalwak and Zarifa Adiba.

Sisters follows UK musician Dan Blackwell to Kabul to meet Afghanistan’s first-ever female orchestra Zohra, the first female orchestra in a country where it is forbidden for women and girls to play music. Every member of this orchestra has faced terrible adversity to play music. Dan learned about Zohra online and got in contact with them first via Facebook and then followed with an email.

Dan Blackwell is a travelling musician and film maker from the UK. After working in the industry as a session guitarist, producer and composer, Dan launched a project called 4bar Collective. The aim was to collaborate with large numbers of musicians, recording four bars of music from each to create original tracks and a network of cross promotion for all the artists involved.

Negin Khpalwak is the conductor of Zohra. At 20 years old she is the oldest member and the leader of the Zohra Ensemble. She sticks with and leads Zohra as the country’s first female conductor despite multiple death threats and family disputes. Zarifa is nowhere to be seen until Dan tracks her down. Discovering her precarious situation, Dan stays with her as she prepares to flee Afghanistan leaving close friends and family behind.

Tony Klinger is the executive producer of Sisters. Tony Klinger is an award-winning writer, and filmmaker. His career follows in the footsteps of his legendary film producer father, the late Michael Klinger, who made films such as the classic ‘Get Carter’ starring Michael Caine, voted the best British film ever by Time Out magazine and Tarantino’s favourite British movie. During a stellar career as a film maker Klinger was a producer or senior executive for films ‘Gold’, ‘Shout at the Devil’, ‘Rachel’s Man’, ‘The Barcelona Kill’ and many others, working with a galaxy of stars such as Lee Marvin, Roger Moore, Michael Caine, The Who, Vincent Price, Mickey Rooney, and Deep Purple.

Give Them Wings – Press Release

Phoenix Worldwide Entertainment signs worldwide rights to disabled Paul Hodgson’s biopic GIVE THEM WINGS

The film stars newcomer Daniel Watson as Paul Hodgson, music legend Toyah Willcox (Quadrophenia, The Tempest), Bill Fellows (Broadchurch, Downton Abbey) Jacob Anderton (13 Graves, Lockdown), Rachel Warren (Rise of the Footsoldier, Eve), Katie Sheridan (K-12, the Convent), Debra Stephenson (Bad Girls), Tracey Wilkinson (Carnival Row, Outlander), Jonathan Hansler  (The Lockdown Hauntings, Highwater) and Bruce Payne (Passenger 57, Election Night).

‘GiveThem Wings’, a feature film written by disabled screenwriter and producer Paul Hodgson takes another step towards its worldwide release this week as production company, GTW productions, signs a worldwide sales deal with Phoenix Worldwide Entertainment.

The film, although caught temporarily in the headlights of Covid, finally completes post production and is ready for its international release.

‘Give Them Wings’, directed by Sean Cronin (Cronin has appeared in ‘James Bond’, ‘Fantastic Beasts’, ‘Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation’ and many more and has directed true human interest stories like WW1 movie ‘Eleven’ and ‘An Unfortunate Woman’) celebrates the life of severely disabled Darlington FC fan Paul Hodgson and is an adaptation of his award winning novel  ‘Flipper’s Side’.

Paul was diagnosed with childhood meningitis aged just ten months old and his parents were told he would never move or speak.  Paul is now 55 years old and has survived to become an award winning novelist, film producer and screenwriter.  ‘Give Them Wings’ is Paul’s incredible journey to acceptance.

The film, set in a much less tolerant 1989, tells the story of Paul’s heart-breaking journey to acceptance and follows in the footsteps of ‘My Left Foot’, ‘Billy Elliot’ and the beautiful French film ‘Untouchable’.

Sean Cronin said, “Give Them Wings is a hugely important film that tackles discrimination of the disabled and turns it on its head, this is a film that teaches mankind that we must accept people for ‘who they are’ and not what they ‘appear to be’.  I was hugely honoured to have been chosen to bring Paul’s incredible story to the big screen”.

Paul Hodgson himself adds, “The film is a culmination of nearly twenty years work.  We are absolutely delighted with the outcome and appreciate the support of all those that helped us on our journey.  Many of our backers have not just supported our efforts but have also invested in the film and we are conscious that they have been instrumental in making the right deal possible”.

Ian Carter, producer on the film and lifelong friend of Paul added “the determination shown by Paul to get this film over the line is encapsulated in the film; it is an emotional rollercoaster with timely injections of humour”.

Ian continued, “Finding the right Sales Agent was crucial, we attracted interest from some top class companies that we would have been happy to work with, but we needed to be certain that we were selecting a company that would best suit the size of our film and target the right areas.  We are very pleased to have secured an agreement with Phoenix Worldwide Entertainment and look forward to working with them”.

Michael Cowan of Phoenix said “This is a film that is uplifting and shows the power of the human spirit against all odds.  Newcomer Daniel Watson who plays Paul Hodgson gives an incredible performance and Toyah Willcox, who plays his mother, is just sublime.  I am very pleased to be working with Paul, Sean and Ian on ‘Give Them Wings”.

‘Give Them Wings’ has already won ‘Best independent Feature’ at the London Independent Film Festival (LIFF) and ‘Best British Feature’ at the London Independent Film Awards (LIFA).

“Murder in the Woods” in Drive-Ins and Nationwide August 14

“…a smart, funny and very effective horror movie that recalls classics of the genre but has a voice and style all its own” – Jim Hemphill, Filmmaker Magazine

“A non-stop thrill ride that doesn’t let up.” – Humberto Guida, LATV

Los Angeles, California – August 4, 2020 – From REZINATE Entertainment and Yel Productions, the award-winning slasher film MURDER IN THE WOODS comes to drive-ins and theaters nationwide on August 14, 2020, with a Digital and Video on Demand release slated for September 18, 2020. Directed and produced by Mexican filmmaker Luis Iga Garza (The Call) and written and produced by Yelyna De León (Will and Grace, A Better Life), the fun yet frightening thriller stars an exclusively multicultural cast in non-stereotypical roles, including José Julián (A Better Life, Shameless), Jeanette Samano (ISA, Female Fight Squad), Chelsea Rendon (Vida, Bright), Catherine Toribio (Jane the Virgin), Jordan Diambrini (The Outfield) and Kade Wise (Empire). It also features Danny Trejo (Machete), Soledad St. Hilaire (Beatriz at Dinner), Kurt Caceres (Better Call Saul, Dexter) and Rolando Molina (American Dad!, Next Friday).

MURDER IN THE WOODS is centered on a group of college friends who plan a getaway to celebrate a birthday party at a desolate cabin in the woods. Against his grandmother’s (Soledad St. Hilaire) demands, Jesse (José Julián), a loner-type decides to go on a trip with his friends. He is immediately smitten with Fernanda (Jeanette Samano), a sweet girl from Chicago whom he hasn’t seen in years. She is in town visiting her loudmouth cousin, Chelsea (Chelsea Rendon), who is ready to celebrate her birthday and plans to let loose with her boyfriend Gabe (Jordan Diambrini). Tagging along at the last second are Jule (Kade Wise), the class clown pothead, and the very out-of-his-league Celeste (Catherine Toribio). Soon after arriving to the mysterious cabin in the woods, the group of teens discover the dark secret it holds, which forces them to fight for their lives.

“I realized that this type of film had never been done in English for a mainstream audience, where Latinos and people of color are the leads and they are not portrayed in stereotypical ways,” says Director Luis Iga Garza. “This is why, while developing this indie feature, we were very conscious of making sure that there would be a diverse cast in lead roles.”

“For us, it’s important for this story to be universal, but being Mexican-American, it was also important for the script to include cultural Latino references such as El Dia de los Muertos, The Chupacabras, and other stories that are recognizable,” says writer and producer Yelyna De León. “We purposely showed authentic moments, such as the altars to honor our ancestors, and blessings when we leave the house, memorable experiences that we share with our families.”

Breaking diversity barriers in Hollywood with its multicultural cast and filmmakers, MURDER IN THE WOODS is hailed as an “…eerie …hellacious throwback to old school slasher films” (Humberto Guida, LATV). The horror premiered at the Festival Internacional de Cine de Guadalajara in LA (FICG in LA) at the TCL Chinese Theatre in Hollywood, thrilling audiences and selling out in 24 hours. During the festival run, the film won nine awards, including Best Film at the LA Skins Film Festival and XicanIndie Film Fest, in addition to Best Supporting Actor (Kade Wise), Best Sound Design and Best Soundtrack at the Macabre Faire Film Festival in New York, as well as the Panavision New Filmmaker Grant.

REZINATE Pictures will manage the theatrical distribution with Amor Media in charge of the theatrical sales. REZINATE Pictures in partnership with Stadium Media, will distribute the Digital and Video on Demand release.
